Trash and Recycling information for Boston's South End


TRASH COLLECTION

The City collects trash every Tuesday and Friday throughout the South End. Christmas is the only holiday when there is no trash collection.  Set trash out neatly at the curb by 7am on your trash day(s) or after 5pm the night before. Remember to separate trash from recycling on the curb.

Setting trash out for pickup in kitchen bags, grocery store bags, paper bags, cartons, or boxes is not acceptable.

Unacceptable Items for Regular Trash
If these items are reusable, you can donate them. Or, you must hire a commercial rubbish hauler to collect them; search the yellow pages for listings

automotive components
dirt, rocks, stones
fire debris
construction and demolition material
fences
oil drums
plumbing fixtures
more than a gallon of liquid waste (including cooking oil)
syringes and needles (for information about safe disposal, contact the Boston Needle Exchange Program at 617-592-7828)

RECYCLING
Curbside Recycling is picked up every Tuesday throughout the South End in households with 1-6 units. Free blue bins are available from the City - just call 617-635-4959. They deliver too. Take your Blue Bin, paper and cardboard out to the curb before 7 am on your recycling day, or put out the night before after 5 pm.

Acceptable Materials

The following is the list of acceptable marterials for curbside collection. Please follow the directions to avoid contamination.

Paper

Place in paper bag next to blue bin.
  • Newspaper (with inserts)
  • Magazines/ Catalogues
  • Junk mail (remove free samples)
  • White & colored paper/brown bags
  • Telephone books/paperback books
  • Flattened binboard (e.g. cereal boxes)
  • Milk cartons - flattened
  • Flattened corrugated cardboard (3' x 3' or less, place under or next to Blue Bin)

    No soiled paper or cardboard
    Please do not put paper in plastic bags
    No pizza boxes.
Containers
Rinse and place inside blue bin.
  • Glass bottles/ jars. Labels may stay No broken glass or light bulbs, dishes, glasses, Pyrex, window or auto glass.
  • Tin & aluminum food and soda cans, aluminum foil, pie plates, jar lids-Remove lids. Labels may stay.
  • All plastic containers - Caps & lid may stay. No motor oil or chemical containers
  • Juice & soy milk boxes

    No plastic bags

  • Trash put out prior to 5PM the evening before the Tuesday and Friday AM pickup
  • Excessive litter on sidewalk/gutter in front of a building
